Introduction



Objective

   Tasked with the responsibility of selecting an established firm for an in-depth case study and analysis of how they have utilized Information Systems to increase productivity and quality over the past 3-5 years. We are then responsible to propose recommendations for further improvements in the next 3-5 years. Somerset Medical Center was selected by group consensus as the firm for our case study. We will employ Porter Five Forces to determine their Business Strategy. We will further discuss their Competitive Strategy while also examine how they implement Information Systems – What benefit do they gain? What is the industry trend? What are the pros and con of their IS? How can they improve? The report will be finalized with a group consensus on recommendations for improvement. At the conclusion of this project we look forward to having a better understanding of the principals, theory and work covered in class, through this real world practical implementation of what we have learned.


History
Somerset Hospital, 1901
   In 1898, a local 16 year old boy succumbed to his head injury and died. His death was attributed to the absence of a local healthcare facility since it was determined that he would have survived had he receive medical attention. Following this tragic loss the local community united in support of raising funds and establishing a local hospital. Somerset Hospital as it was known officially opened its doors in 1901, working out of a converted local home on East Main Street in Somerville, New Jersey.

   The organization has experience tremendous growth over the years. Somerset Medical Center has recently completed a four-year $100 million expansion and renovation project which includes extending their Emergency Department, establishing additional onsite Radiology and Laboratory services and adding specialized treatment for patients with cardiac, gynecologic, psychiatric and orthopedic emergencies.



Analysis Summary

When it comes to information systems in the healthcare field, SMC has proven to be a leader. Over the years, SMC have seen and capitalized on the need for innovation and technology in the medical field, well ahead of regulatory requirements and its competitors. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, they have accumulated multiple awards, distinction and recognitions within the healthcare industry.

Ø  Top 5 in "IT Transformational Leadership Award" by CHIME and Center for Healthcare Trans.
Ø  Attained 63% electronic physician entries, accomplished by only 6% of hospitals nationwide.
Ø  Achieved prestigious Magnet recognition by ANCC, awarded to only 6% of hospitals nationwide.
