Conclusion

Overall, we are impressed with our analysis of Somerset Medical Center and their standpoint on managing their information systems.  They discovered early the benefits of integrating a digital format into the healthcare practice.  Technological advancements to their systems have proven to save them time and money, but most importantly, efficiency in providing successful healthcare to their patients during their stay.  SMC runs smoothly because they avoid information silos when storing patients' information. Through the use of Real Time Location System (RTLS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR),  SMC swiftly improves a patient's flow of information in and out of the hospital.

Somerset Medical Center has been facing another challenge for some time now that they have not been able to overcome: sufficient funding and resources.  Their stand alone setup has provided many challenges with the advancement of government standards and competition.  They have resorted to merging with Robert Woods Johnson's Medical franchise, who has the funding and resource backing SMC lacks.  However, SMC has the technological format that Robert Wood Johnson lacks.  They have proven themselves as a worthy asset to a major franchise.

During our interview with Barbara S. Boelter and Michael J. Walsh, Michael profoundly said it best in regards to their key to success.  While talking about the hospital's stance on managing the five components of information systems, he said that they are foremost a hospital prioritizing healthcare.  In order to manage that properly in the current digital age, they have to find individuals within the medical industry who can adapt to the technological side.  Individuals such as Barbara had a full career in nursing then found herself as a manager of SMC's Information Technology Systems department.  She prioritized the adaptation of digital system management around the hospital's main goal: helping sick people become well.  This constant focus throughout their IT department has helped them advance to where they are today.
